Products labelled with the Swedish Seal of Quality are safe. To ensure this an independent inspection company checks that all farms comply with the Swedish Seal criteria. The inspections for cereals is done in three phases and for fresh produce and ornamentals in two phases:
Example combinable crops
The auditing is done in three phases:
- 1st party audit - Swedish Seal farmers make sure they are meeting the standards themselves via a checklist (National legislation and Swedish Seal criteria).
- 2nd party audit. All "first year" growers get an inspection by the 2nd party. The second party audits thereafter approximately 40% of the farmers each (The second paryt is the grain co-operative, Lantmännen)
- 3rd party audit . Approximately 10% of the farmers are audited by an independent accredited company, Semko-Dekra Certification. Semko-Dekra also audits the 2nd party (Lantmännen) so the whole concept is guaranteed credibility.
Example fresh produce & ornamentals
The auditing is done in two phases:
- 1st party audit - Swedish Seal farmers make sure they are meeting the standards (National legislation) themselves via a checklist.
- 3rd party audits. All "first year" growers get an inspection by the 3rd party and thereafter approximately 40% of the farmers are audited every year. The 3rd party is the accredited inspection company SMAK, (www.smak.se).
The fresh produce & ornamentals standard also comply with the Eurepgap standard for fresh produce, www.eurep.org, hence SMAK is also accredited to Eurepgap.
